The OCAD Student Union provides advocacy services that offer confidential advice and support to all OCAD University students.


Services Available: academic misconduct, appeals, policies and procedures, preparing for hearings, mediation, representation, and student-life concerns such as bullying, discrimination, harassment, sexual harassment, victimization, or vilification.

Checklist ✔


1.
Clarify the Issue:

• Write down exactly what happened, when, who was involved, and how it impacted you.

• Identify what you are seeking: clarification, an extension, grade review, accommodation, or support.

2. Communicate Directly With the Instructor or Relevant Staff:

• Email the instructor or staff member first.

• Clearly explain the concern, include relevant facts, and propose a reasonable solution.

• Allow time for a response and keep the communication respectful and professional.


3. Review and Use Relevant Policies and/or Procedures:

• Check course outlines, school policies, student rights documents, and accommodation guidelines.

• Determine how these policies support your concern or the resolution you’re seeking.

4. Document Everything:

• Keep copies of emails, notes from conversations, dates, and screenshots.

• Maintain a timeline of what steps you’ve taken to resolve the issue.

5. Escalate to the Dean of the Department:

• If the issue remains unresolved after speaking with the instructor or staff and reviewing policies, reach out to the Dean or Program Chair.

• Provide a concise summary: the issue, steps you’ve already taken, and the outcome you’re seeking.

• Attach your documentation for clarity.

Dr. Jacqui Spencer holds a PhD from the University of Toronto, where her research explored the connections between anti-Blackness, Black women’s hair politics, and wellness. She is passionate about creating spaces where authenticity, inclusion, and empowerment thrive, celebrating culture, inspiring confidence, and driving meaningful systemic change every day.
